I have devised two workshops that are intended
to familiarize psychiatrists with court procedure. They take
the form of fully scripted 'plays'. Participants dress up, where
appropriate, and read from their scripts. At the end of each
short scene and at the end of the whole play there is discussion
about of the various learning points.
Each workshop requires a half day, a room large
enough to convert into a court-room and suitable tables and
chairs. I provide wigs, gowns, police uniforms and handcuffs
etc.
These workshops are suitable for incorporation
into postgraduate medical education programmes. A minimum attendance
of 15 people is necessary in order to have sufficient actors
for the courtroom scene. There is no maximum number but if numbers
exceed 25, it is not possible for every participant to have
a part.
